A Green Driver is a Good Driver

With the arrival of the year 2012, the eco-bonus for the environmentally friendly cars already belongs to the past. But no worries; we’ve already thought of some solutions to help you stay within budget. Curious about our 10 tips for a conscious driving?

1. Compare the prices of the fuel in your town and the neighbouring towns.

You’ll find the official prices of the fuel and the forecasts on www.carbu.be (French) or www.brandstofprijzen.be (Flemish) as well as the prices by petrol station and by region.

2. Move forward or wait

Constantly speeding up and stopping will make you waste a lot of fuel and will also damage your car. If you move forward through the traffic without stopping, you’ll save much fuel. So, if there are traffic jams and you can’t move forward, try to be patient and wait a bit until you can advance at least some metres.

3. Take the bike for short distances

A cold engine burns more fuel. In order to avoid wasting too much fuel, start taking the bike for distances of up to 8 km. If by any reason it’s essential for you to take the car, try to drive slowly during the first 15 minutes.

4. Become a green driver

A constant speed doesn’t just reduce CO2 emissions, but also the fuel consumption of your car. You’ll perhaps have the impression that you drive slowly, but you’ll still get to your destination sooner than you’d imagine it.

5. Take your car to a garage

It’s important to check the pressure of the tyres, since you’ll also reduce the consumption of petrol by reducing the air and road resistance. Don’t forget to replace the air filter as well.

6. Make the most out of the warm engine

Make your short trips the same day. Do you have an appointment with the dentist next Monday? You could try to go to the supermarket later in the same day, for instance. When the engine of your car is warm, you burn less fuel for the same distance.

7. Pay attention to your parking techniques

Less manoeuvring means less speeding up and stopping, and, therefore, less fuel consumption. Try to park your car in a way that allows you not to have to manoeuvre with a cold engine when you leave your emplacement the following day.

8. Optimise your car’s weight

Leave your ski equipment in the garage, empty the boot and try to refuel when the petrol tank is empty. This will also help you keep your car’s fuel consumption to a minimum.

9. Reduce the use of the heating and the air conditioning

It’s not so difficult to reduce the use of the heating and the air conditioning if you leave your car in the garage. In the summer, your garage will keep your car fresh, and it’s not always necessary to turn on the heating during the winter months. Don’t forget that the heating and the air conditioning considerably increase the fuel consumption!

10. Reduce the fuel consumption thanks to your GPS device

Probably, you already know that you can find the shortest ways to your destinations with a GPS device. But did you know that the newest systems are also equipped with an eco function? The latest GPS devices give you immediate access to useful information about the fuel consumption and the C02 emissions of your car.
